John has been with Bain Capital Ventures as a Managing Director and head of the Operating Group since 2009. He recently assumed the role of Senior Advisor. His focus continues to be on partnering with a number of CEOs and management teams to address strategic and operational issues associated with growth.
John has a 30+ year proven track record of innovation, vision, and execution in creating successful businesses. He has been a successful CEO of five different companies, two of which he founded. He has raised over $100 million and created over $1 billion+ in shareholder value in partnership with 12 financial sponsors.
As Managing Director and head of the Operating Group at Bain Capital Ventures, John has worked with over 25 portfolio companies to address strategic and operating issues, as well as develop strategies and tactics to accelerate value. He has been a Chairman, Non-Executive Chairman, or Director on more than 15 boards. John has also assumed the role of interim CEO at three companies during this time period. Lastly, he has been intimately involved in hiring numerous CEOs and Executives across the BCV portfolio.
Prior to Bain Capital Ventures, John served as Chairman and CEO of M|C Communications, President and Chief Executive Officer of Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS), and held several major positions at IBM. While at IBM, John was responsible for leading the Integration Program that brought together 70,000 PWCC and IBM professionals from across 56 countries to create the IBM Business Consulting Group.
John also founded two companies, Mainspring, Inc. and Course Technology. Mainspring was established in 1996, and under John’s leadership, it grew from a startup to a publicly traded company that was ultimately purchased by IBM in June 2001. Prior to Mainspring, John founded Course Technology, which was sold to the Thomson Corporation.
