Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis watched the elite runners cross the finish line at the 2013 Boston Marathon and left shortly after that.

When Davis arrived home, the police chief called him. Davis was told there were two explosions and one of their most experienced homicide detectives was screaming for all the ambulances he could get.

“He never screams so that was the first indication this was something serious,” Davis said. “He’s talking about multiple amputations.”

Davis, who is now retired from law enforcement and runs his own security company, spoke to more than 100 people Friday at the annual Crime Watch Breakfast at The Colony.
